If you are choosing a surface for a play area, the ground under the equipment matters more than anything bolted on top of it. That is the whole job of playground rubber mulch: catch the fall when a kid comes off the slide or the monkey bars.

We make ours from 100% recycled tires, and we have been shipping it factory-direct since 2008. Here is what it does, where it fits, and how to pick the right amount.

Rubber Mulch

Why Rubber Mulch for Playgrounds

Rubber mulch absorbs impact. Laid at the right depth, it softens falls from the kind of heights you see on home and commercial play equipment, and it keeps that cushioning year after year.

Wood chips feel soft on day one, then compact and lose their give within a season. Pea gravel gets kicked and thrown. Sand ends up tracked into the house and hides whatever gets dropped in it. Rubber mulch stays put and keeps doing its job.

Could the surface under your play equipment actually cushion a fall from the top of the slide right now? If you are not sure, that is worth sorting out before someone finds out the hard way.

IPEMA Certification
and Fall Height

For playgrounds, two things decide whether a surface is actually protective: certification and depth. Look for IPEMA certification, which means the material has been tested for playground use, and make sure it is laid to the right depth for the height of your equipment. Deeper equipment needs more cushioning underneath.

Our KinderMulch playground rubber mulch is IPEMA-certified, so you are starting from a product built for this, not a general landscaping material pressed into the role.

Rubber Mulch vs. Wood Chips, Pea Gravel, and Sand

Wood chips are cheap and need topping up constantly as they break down. Pea gravel and sand move around, get messy, and do not hold their protective depth. Rubber mulch costs more up front, but it does not rot, fade fast, or wash away, so you are not redoing it every spring.

Over a few years, the surface that stays in place and keeps its cushioning is the one that actually protects kids and saves money.

Where Playground Rubber Mulch Works

It works anywhere kids play. Backyard swing sets and play structures. School yards and daycare play areas. Park and municipal equipment. Commercial and HOA playgrounds. The surface need is the same in every one of those: catch the fall and keep doing it for years.

How Much You Need and How Deep

The amount depends on your area and the depth your equipment calls for. The fastest way to a real number is our rubber mulch calculator, which gives you an estimate in a few seconds. Tell us your square footage and target depth and we will confirm the exact tonnage.

Colors

Black is the most popular for play areas and it holds its color the longest. Colored options like blue, green, red, and brown are available too if you want the space to pop, though they soften in tone after a few seasons of direct sun. Black just stays black.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. At the correct depth, IPEMA-certified rubber mulch gives strong impact absorption and does not splinter the way wood does. It is a common choice for both backyard and commercial play areas.

It depends on the height of your equipment. Taller equipment needs more depth underneath to cushion a fall. Send us your equipment height and we will tell you the right depth and how much you need.

Ten to twelve years is a reasonable expectation. It does not break down like wood chips, so you are not refreshing it every spring.

Like any surface in direct sun, it warms up. Lighter colors and shaded play areas stay cooler. We are happy to talk through the best color and setup for your space.

Price depends on color, volume, and depth, so there is no single number. Send us your square footage and target depth and request a free quote, delivery included.
