The Safety Standard Your Students Deserve

Playground surfacing for a school leaves no room for compromise. KinderMulch Playground Rubber Mulch is IPEMA certified to absorb impacts from falls of up to 16 feet at just 6 inches of depth, the highest safety rating in the industry. For residential or lighter-use areas, it also meets certification for 10-foot fall heights at 4 inches of depth.

Every batch is 99.9% metal-free, which removes the risk of sharp debris that can lurk in lower-grade recycled materials. KinderMulch meets both ASTM F-1292 for impact attenuation and ASTM F-1951 for wheelchair accessibility, so your playground is safer and fully ADA compliant.

For administrators and facility managers, that means fewer incident reports, fewer liability concerns, and a surface that meets or exceeds every relevant federal and industry safety benchmark.

If you are working out what fall height your equipment actually requires, our guide to fall height ratings for Chicago daycares walks through it.

The Economic Argument: Invest Once, Protect for a Decade

School budgets are tight. Every dollar spent keeping a playground serviceable is a dollar not spent in the classroom. That is exactly why KinderMulch pays for itself over time.

Wood mulch breaks down. It decomposes, compresses, develops mold, and needs topping off or fully replacing every one to two years. Over a decade those costs add up fast, and so does the labor time your grounds staff spends on it.

KinderMulch is different. It will not decompose, compress, mold, or freeze. It drains quickly even after heavy rain, so the playground is usable again sooner. And it comes backed by a 12-year color warranty, meaning the color will not wash off, rub off, or stain students’ clothing.

Here is how the two compare over a decade:

  • Lifespan: 12 or more years against 1 to 2 years before wood needs replacing
  • Annual top-offs: none, against yearly for wood
  • Decomposes or molds: no, against yes
  • Drainage after rain: quick, against slow and water-retaining
  • Attracts insects: no, against yes
  • Color warranty: 12 years, against none
  • ADA accessible: yes under ASTM F-1951, against difficult for wheelchairs
  • Fall height certification: IPEMA certified to 16 feet, against variable and generally lower

For districts buying in bulk at 7 tons or more, quantity discounts are available. Factor in fewer replacement cycles, less labor, and fewer safety incidents, and KinderMulch turns out to be the cheaper choice as well as the safer one.

Sustainability Your Students Can See

Every ton of KinderMulch recycles 134 scrap tires that would otherwise sit in a landfill. When your school lays KinderMulch, it is upgrading a playground and making a visible, measurable commitment to sustainability that students, parents and the wider community can see every day.

That creates a real teaching opportunity. Schools around the country use their rubber mulch playgrounds as a starting point for conversations about recycling, waste reduction and environmental responsibility. The playground becomes a hands-on example of turning waste into something valuable.

KinderMulch is 100% made in the USA from recycled tires. Choosing it puts your district alongside a growing network of institutions practising environmental stewardship rather than just talking about it.

It comes in six colors: Bark Brown, Evergreen, Natural Black, Ocean Blue, Onyx Black and Rustic Redwood. Whether you want a natural look or something matching your school colors, there is an option that fits.

Beyond Surfacing: Play Equipment for Schools

Schools looking at surfacing often need equipment too. Our gaga ball pit is a popular choice for school yards and comes in green and orange, and we also supply playground wear mats and swing mats for the high-traffic spots that take the most punishment.

Chicagoland’s Own: A Family Business Built on Purpose

Recycled Rubber Products is a woman-owned, family-operated business headquartered in Joliet, Illinois. For over two decades the company has turned millions of scrap tires into high-quality, safe playground and landscaping products.

Working with us means working with a local team that understands what Chicagoland schools and municipalities need. You get direct access to the people who manufacture your product, not a call center or a middleman.

We offer curbside delivery across the Chicagoland area and ship nationwide for districts outside the region. Production is made to order, so Natural Black ships within 1 to 3 business days and colored mulch within 3 to 5.
